Summer on Vancouver Island is a special time of year for so many reasons. Paddleboard or kayak from one of the many beaches, get out into the water and search for marine life, spend a relaxing day on the beach, wander around downtown and browse the incredible local boutiques, visit heritage sites and learn more about Victoria’s history or spend the day hiking along the shoreline or through ancient forests in one of our many pristine parks – there is no end to the amount of activities that you can fill our sun-soaked days with. From your front door, you can walk across the Johnson Street bridge right onto the Songhees walkway, a path that takes you along the water’s edge right to Spinnakers. COVID-19 Update EMR Vacation Rentals

Updated April 11, 2022

As of April 1, 2022, Canada now allowing all travelers from the United States, who have been fully vaccinated to cross into Canada without having to take a COVID-19 test. There is still a requirement to use the ArriveCan travel app to upload proof documentation and crossing times.

April 8, 2022 the BC Government has lifted the requirement for a \”proof of vaccination\” to access most public businesses and facilities. There may be some businesses that choose to continue to operate requesting proof. We just ask you to respect their wishes. Important Updated Notice as of April 23, 2021 for Guests Staying between April 20 – May 24, 2021

For guests already staying in the properties at the time of this release are not required to leave under this order. If you are staying in any of our properties for essential reasons during this time frame we are still open to host your stay.

For guests with stays booked during this date range for non essential reasons EMR Vacation Rentals will now accept cancellations for stays the begin April 20 and ending on May 24, 2021 using the COVID-19 Cancellation Clause in our guest agreement.

Section 2.4 of the Guest Agreement

2.4 Special Cancellation terms for the Guest booking during COVID-19 pandemic

2.4.1 The Guest agrees that if booking after March 18, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic that they are sharing in the risk and understanding that there is the possibility local or international authorities may prevent the Owner and the Owner’s Agent to be able to provide access to the property.

2.4.2 In the event the Owner and the Owner’s Agent are unable to provide access to the property for the Guest due to forced closure of travel directly where the property is located by official local government authorities, or by the Province of British Columbia, or the Government of Canada, the following will apply. The Owner and the Owner’s Agent will do their best to move the Guest’s booking to a future date in the same property, or provide payments received from the Guest as a credit toward a future date to be used by the Guest within 12 months, or provide a refund less 25% of the total cost of accommodation (base rent plus applicable taxes and fees)

Here are the options that we are making available to our guests directly impacted by these orders at this time.

  1. We will continue to be open and can host your stay. Must ensure you are following all provincial health orders when staying at the property.
  2. Attempt to move your dates in the same property for a future date (if available or to different property if dates are not available for the original property booked). 
  3. Convert your deposits paid into a non refundable stay credit to be applied to a future stay to be used within 12 months of cancellation. 
  4. Cancel your booking completely receive a refund less 25% of the total booking value as a cancellation fee.

Stays within Vacation Rentals
The Provincial Health Doctor, Dr. Bonnie Henry, has made a temporary Health Order in council with regard to use of vacation rentals and private residences. The requirement is in effect until May 24, 2021 and overrides earlier health orders from the Province of BC.

2. There is an advisory to travel only for essential purposes but there is no official restrictions at this time for travel.

IMPORTANT NOTICE JULY 27, 2020:
The Provincial Health Doctor, Dr. Bonnie Henry, has made a Health Order in council with regard to use of vacation rentals.

Please note the following orders;

  1. A maximum of five individuals may attend a social gathering or an event in vacation accommodation, in addition to the occupants;
  2. The owner of vacation accommodation must require any tenant, guest or other person using the vacation accommodation to comply with the requirement in section 1.

EMR Vacation Rentals already has a requirement that all guests fill in a roster of all guests that will be staying at the property.

If you are planning to have non staying guests (visitors) over to the vacation rental property you are renting, it is a requirement that you provide EMR Vacation Rentals with a list of names and their contact information for each additional visitor. We need this list in the event a requirement from the Province of BC to contract trace all guests and visitors to the rental.

Precautionary Measures EMR Vacation Rentals is Currently Taking

We have always used cleaning products with disinfectant. In addition to normal cleaning procedures, our housekeeping staff will increase focus on “high touch” items like light switches, doorknobs, remotes, etc. We are also removing non essential decorative pillows, blankets, and comforters.

EMR has adjusted check-in and check-out times to provide extra cleaning time. We are now asking guests to depart no later than 10 AM and check-in not earlier than 5:00 pm. We have also, where possible, placing 24 hour blocks from rentals between rental dates in 2020. We do have rentals that have been pre-booked with back to back rental dates. We are unable to accommodate later check out or early check-ins on back to back changeover days. Please contact our guest services team to confirm if early arrivals can be accommodated.

No Contact Check-In. Check-in for all properties is available via Greeter that will provide a social distancing check-in procedure, Electronic lock, or Lock box access. Our guests services team will be providing each guest with instructions dependent on which property they have booked and time of arrival.

FAQ

Note: EMR Vacation Rentals reserves the right to change these temporary policies at any time.

Are you providing refunds on cancelled bookings?

We are no longer providing refunds, even in circumstances where border closures into Canada are in effect. If your reservation arrives after June 1, 2020 or up to August 31 of 2020, we will allow you to move the reservation to a later date in 2020 in the same property or convert your deposit payments into a travel credit that can be used in any property EMR Vacation Rentals manages but it must booked within 365 days from your cancelled arrival date and must be used by December 31, 2021 stay dates. The rates are subject to seasonal dynamic rate changes. If you decide to during a high demand period versus lower demand period for example, guests will be responsible for only the rate difference and taxes on those differences. There are no refunds for unused travel credits nor are the travel credits transferable to a different guest.

Can I pick dates beyond 12 Months?

Yes based on availability of the property but the stay must be used no later than December 31, 2021. However, since each property is independently owned, future dates well into 2021 may not yet be made available by the owner of the property.

Once I’ve selected my rescheduled dates can I change the dates again?

You can only change the dates for a second time if there are local COVID-19 restrictions in place. This will be at our discretion and based on local British Columbia regulations that directly impact the property that has been rented.

What happens if I choose to cancel my booking and do not wish to have a travel credit or move my dates – what will I get back if I cancel?

The EMR Vacation Rentals standard cancellation policies in the guest agreement will apply. See section under Cancellation By Guest.

If you have booked through AirBnb, please submit a cancellation request through their website booking platform.

Isn’t there a travel ban?

Currently there is not an official travel ban in British Columbia only a advisory to ensure proper social distancing and cleaning procedures also follow all mask requirements in some businesses and public places. Canadians are not being denied entry or travel into British Columbia.

Can I have visitors over to see me at during my vacation rental stay?

This is an evolving policy please be aware it can change at any time. Besides abiding by EMR Vacation Rentals restrictions on additional guests visitors, there is currently a Provincial Health order requiring no more than 5 visitors over at one time to see you. We are requiring our guests to ensure they keep a detailed list of full names and contact information for every visitor you have had over to the property. We may need this information to provide the the BC Government in the event of an urgent need to contact trace over a positive COVID-19 finding.

I’m traveling from outside of Canada, can I cross the border?

This is dependent on each country of origin and their travel agreement with the Canadian Government. Please check current travel restrictions to Canada by contacting your local border authorities from your country of origin. Currently US travel into Canada has a non essential travel ban until November 21, 2020. 

Please note we are no longer providing refunds due to border restrictions for COVID-19 for any traveler outside of Canada. We can assist in moving your dates or providing a travel credit for a future stay. 

Important Note: Please make sure you have purchased sufficient trip cancellation and disruption insurance. Most credit card companies sell trip cancellation insurance to their cardholders or already have it included as part of their members perks. Please check with your credit card company to confirm. If they do not sell it we advise contacting Travel Guard International of Rental Guardian or any other third party travel insurance provider.

If this is something you want to try, you’ll have to be properly equipped! It is important to wear a wetsuit or drysuit, gloves, and hood to stay warm in case you fall in the water. Additionally, you should wear appropriate footwear that will keep your feet warm and provide good traction on the board. Ocean:

Gorge Waterway:  Known simply as “The Gorge” to Victoria locals, this waterway is a narrow tidal inlet that connects Victoria Harbour to Portage Inlet and a walkable paddleboarding location for guests staying at an EMR property downtown Victoria. Here you can paddle past waterfront neighbourhoods, historic bridges, eelgrass meadows and massive kelp beds below the surface.

On slower days, paddling past all the downtown attractions provides a beautiful, new perspective on this heritage city.

Sooke Potholes 

As soon as you arrive in Sooke, you’re going to want to start planning a day at Sooke Potholes, an extensive network of deep, smooth, pools filled with clear turquoise water located right near the Sooke River. Formed during the last ice age, these formations are truly stunning and one of the best spots to find cool, clear water to take a dip in.

Matheson Lake 

If you’re looking for a nearby swimming area in Metchosin, your best bet is Matheson Lake just off Rocky Point Rd! Work up a sweat before your dip with a walk around the lake on the picturesque trail, set up for a sunny afternoon on the sandy beach area or take a quick dip before starting your journey on the Galloping Goose.

Gonzalez Bay Beach

If you’re looking for ocean swimming, you won’t be hard pressed to find stunning beaches and excellent clear waters to swim in all over the Victoria coast. Gonzalez Bay Beach, is an enclosed cove with white sand that is always popular for summertime swimming. 

Willows Beach 

This beautiful neighbourhood park is another sandy beach that offers clear ocean swimming and lots of space to set up for an afternoon in the sun. 

Thetis Lake

If the cold waters of the Pacific aren’t the swimming experience you are looking for, we have lovely swimming lakes that you won’t want to miss! Thetis Lake is one of the best swimming spots near Victoria. There are two sandy beaches to choose from, one at the southernmost end and one on the west side of the lake. Additionally, if you are willing to hike a little bit, you can find lots of rocky outcrops perched right on the water’s edge that provide a little privacy and a perfect place to dive into the cool water. This popular lake gets busy in the summer so it’s a good idea to arrive early on the weekends or midweek to escape the weekend crowds. 

Prospect Lake

This one of Victoria’s popular, family friendly swimming spots! Prospect Lake is easily accessible from anywhere in the capital region and has four distinct public parks for you to choose from. 

Cowichan Valley

Cowichan River

One of the most time-honoured summer traditions of the locals of the Cowichan Valley is tubing down the Cowichan River. Here, you can take a walk through the network of trails and explore the forest then cool off with a dip in the river or bring a blanket and a picnic and set up on one of the many spots all along the riverbank to rest, swim and enjoy the sun! The Nanaimo River is an idyllic swimming spot with deep swimming holes of crystal-clear water, perfect for cooling down when the temperatures rise.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to cool off during a heatwave, you’ll want to make your way to Spider Lake. Don’t let the name deter you! This glorious, peaceful lake is one of the best swimming spots in the area. There is a small sandy beach and picnic area perfect for making it a comfortable day at the lake – plus, the warm water makes swimming that much more enjoyable! This is also an excellent lake for paddleboarding or kayaking as well as there are so many little coves to explore in the many winding inlets – which is where Spider Lake got its name!

Have a Reel Good Time! Fishing on South Vancouver Island

There’s a lot to do on south Vancouver Island during the spring but one of the best ways to spend a sunny day is fishing! Whether you decide to spend a slow, peaceful day fishing from the shore on one of the many spots in and around Southern Vancouver Island to drop a line or you can book a charter to head out on the ocean to do some deep fishing, get ready to have an amazing day followed by an amazing dinner! Just make sure you have a valid fishing licence! Both freshwater and saltwater licences are conveniently available to purchase online or at most sporting shops.   

Shore Fishing 

Sooke

One of the earliest independent settlements in the Province, Sooke is a peaceful, historic town nestled amongst wild West Coast landscape. If you’re lucky enough to stay right in Sooke or in the beautiful neighbouring village of Metchosin, you’ll know how quickly you can fall in love with the beauty and tranquillity of this area. Sooke is the perfect spot for all outdoor adventures, especially fishing. 

East Sooke Park

Just a twenty minute hike from the parking lot will take you to the bluffs where the ocean drops off sharply. Here the water runs deep and you can easily fish for Chinook Salmon, Coho, Sockeye and Pink Salmon. If cod and rockfish are more to your liking, a short 5 minute walk will take you to a plethora of sites that are perfect for bottom fishing. In these sites you can cast a line for rockfish and delicious ling cod. A day here is always well spent. If you need equipment, Crab Shack Store and the Sooke Marine Center are great options to make sure you have all the gear to have a successful day out! 

Victoria

As the weather gets warmer, Victoria becomes abuzz with activity. There are so many ways to enjoy the stunning natural beauty of BC’s capital city but fishing is the only one that has a (potential) edible reward at the end of it! Whether you’re staying right in the heart of downtown Victoria or a little farther away in Sidney, there are lots of great spots nearby to do some shore fishing. 

Ten Mile Point

In the summer months, Ten Mile Point is a great spot to try your luck! The rocky outcrops provide the perfect place to set up for the day. With strong currents and an ocean floor that drops away for hundreds of feet, Ten Mile Point provides an ideal spot to fish for Chinook. If you hit those tides perfectly, you can even catch some bottom fish like feisty lingcods. 

Ogden Point Breakwater

Right in bustling neighbourhood of James Bay, you’ll find Ogden Point Breakwater. The huge, concrete walkway is a great place to catch salmon, cod, geenling, flounder, perch and more! 

Cormorant Point

A secret local spot for excellent salmon fishing in Gordon Head, from mid August to late October around 4pm, you can see the water swarming with salmon ready to be caught! 

Langford Lake

If you’re looking for some freshwater fishing, Langford Lake, right in the heart of Langford is stocked full of rainbow trout and smallmouth bass that you can easily catch from the fishing dock found along the Ed Nixon Trail just off Leigh Road. 

Sidney & the Saanich Peninsula 

Sidney is a stunning, walkable seaside town that lives life at a slower pace. One of the most incredible draws is the portion of the Lochside trail that hugs Sidney’s waterfront. 

Elk Lake

This popular lake is a great local option to find excellent shore fishing. There are several rest stops around the lake where you can find spots to cast a line to catch rainbow and coastal cutthroat trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, common carp or yellow perch. 

Sidney Fishing Pier

Here you will find beautiful gardens, a stunning seashore, outdoor gallery and the famous Sidney Fishing Pier. This enormous pier that juts out above the water, makes a great platform for crabbing and fishing. Here you can catch salmon, cod, sole, flounder, and so much more!

Shore fishing is great, but if you don’t have access to gear and you’re up for an adventure, you’re going to want to book a charter to take you out on the water.
